News from the Martinborough Food Bank

Dec 2025

The Food Bank shelves are ready for Christmas.

Rotary & The Fire Brigade Food Drive Wednesday November 5th

Instead of letting off fireworks on 5th November a whole lot of people involved themselves in the Wairarapa wide food drive to stock their Food Bank shelves for Christmas. In Martinborough there was such a fabulous response from the community!

A huge “THANK YOU” from the Food Bank staff and clients. People took such care in choosing what to give: lots of practical food items balanced with some real treats for Christmas. It’s heart-warming to be involved in the food drive and experience community at its best.

Mitre 10 Gardening Evening

A great early evening turn out on 12th November for a really enjoyable evening with displays and advice, great food to nibble on and some interesting things to drink, games and prizes, lucky ticket draws; all put together by the staff at Mitre 10. A great chance to shop for your garden and do a bit of scoping of what’s available at Mitre 10 that you hadn’t noticed before! Proceeds from ticket sales and a portion from sales came to the Food Bank. That amounted to a whopping $2,000. Thank you, Mitre 10, for your very generous donation!  “and so, say all of us”!

Our New Gardening Project in collaboration with Ruamahunga Farm Foundation

A whole paddock of vegies, one paddock back next to the Catholic Church on Princess St. If you were driving past recently you may have noticed activity in the paddock as it was mown then ploughed, baleage was rolled, out by a very fit team, and on Saturday 15th November the land was blessed for growing and potatoes and pumpkin planted. Corn and cover crop still to come. Thanks to Helen & Ben Masters who led out the team.

Rolling out the Baleage.

P&K Christmas Tree and Presents

Once again this year there is an opportunity for the community to give a gift to the kids of our Food Bank clients. In P&K there’s a massive Christmas tree decked out with Christmas tags. Each tag has written on it the gender and age of one of our kids. The idea is to take a tag (or two) buy a gift, tape the tag on the gift and return it to the big cane basket under the tree.

As the number of families needing food support continues to rise we are so very appreciative of generosity of our community. It’s good knowing that in this community no one needs to go without enough food.

Our Food Bank motto reflects that very thing:

Nau te rourou, naku te rourou ka ora te manuhiri with your food basket and my food basket our people will thrive.

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas from the Team at the Martinborough Food Bank.
