A special community collaboration between the Robert Algie Memorial Sports Trust, Pasifika o Wairarapa Trust, and Matt Spooner from Shoe Clinic Masterton has helped put quality footwear into the hands – and onto the feet – of local ‘āiga and whānau.
Gathering at the home of the Pasifika o Wairarapa Trust in Masterton, families came together to select shoes generously donated by Matt Spooner. The footwear was available either as a koha or free, ensuring no one missed out.
For many, the cost of new sports shoes can be a real barrier – limiting access to physical activity and participation in community sport. This initiative helped to remove that barrier.
It wasn’t just the kids who benefited. Members of the Aosinasina Group, the Pasifika Trust’s elders, were also able to collect shoes to support their walking group – keeping them active, mobile, and connected.
This marks the first shoe drive of its kind for the region, with more planned.
The Robert Algie Memorial Sports Trust, established in memory of local sportsman Robert Algie, exists to support and encourage Wairarapa youth in their sporting endeavours. The Trust provides funding and practical support to help young people pursue their goals and participate fully in sport – regardless of financial barriers. Partnering in this initiative continues that mission of empowering youth through opportunity, inclusion, and community spirit.
The Pasifika o Wairarapa Trust plays a vital role in supporting Pacific communities across the region – fostering wellbeing, education, cultural pride, and connection. Hosting the event at their Masterton base helped ensure the shoes reached those who would benefit most, in an environment that was welcoming and community-centred.
And at the heart of it all was Matt Spooner and Shoe Clinic Masterton, whose generosity made the initiative possible. Matt’s ongoing commitment to giving back to the community – through quality footwear, expert advice, and genuine care – is deeply appreciated by everyone involved.
The Trusts and Matt Spooner plan to continue this collaboration, taking future shoe drives to other parts of the Wairarapa. Because sometimes, something as simple as a good pair of shoes can make all the difference – helping kids and adults alike stay active, connected, and confident.
