Nov 2025

Well, there are some plants left in the garden, although they look pretty tired, as we probably all do from the huge and heinous winds!

Our rather lovely decoratively woven pea and bean supports look as though they have had a few too many Pinots and will require reworking and in some cases replanting. Branches have broken from trees and, things that most people will be all too familiar within these breezy times. The only real solution is to recue what we can and replant where we can. Gardening always was the “art of the patient”!

On the brighter side, we are preparing to celebrate 10 years of growth, harvesting and delivery of vegies to the Community Larder at the Medical Centre. During that time, we have managed a delivery of veggies most Wednesdays; delivered to families identified as needing veggies through Covid; won a Community Initiative Award; received regular grants from the Community Board; grown from four to about a dozen planters, with a couple of other areas for corn, Kumara, pumpkins and a netted section generally reserve for tomatoes. We have changed our composting regime; have been generously served by horse and donkey pooh donors, Peastraw donors; and from time-to-time dag donors, liquid fertilizer donors and seed weed donors and last but definitely not least John who generously donates his land and Nathan who generously donates his water. The list goes on…plants, nets, tools ..oh! and the anonymous fella who turned up and fixed the wheelbarrow.

However, mostly there have been small, but enthusiastic teams of gardeners: Mostly and almost exclusively groups of women: seldom more than three or four at a time, but all keen and dedicated. Some have come with a great degree of expertise ingardening: others with no experience whatsoever: some have stayed for a long time; some have just dropped in while on holiday. Some love informality (You can do whatever you want as long as 2 regular gardeners agree); others struggle with this, but somehow or another it gets sorted. We are always keen to add to our numbers.

Sunday 16 November 3-4.30pm we are having a small birthday celebration for all and any who have gardened over the past 10 years at the MCG: and for all or any who have benefited from our produce at the Community Larder: and for all who have donated.

All this aside on Sunday 16 November 3-4.30pm we are having a small birthday celebration for all and any who have gardened over the past 10 years at the MCG: and for all or any who have benefited from our produce at the Community Larder: and for all who have donated goodies-plants, land, water etc. If you wish to join us come along to 51 Oxford Street, bring some food or drink to share and celebrate 10 years of Community Gardening. (Better bring a drinking vessel too). We would love to see you there.
