Ol’ King Cole Swings Martinborough with Vintage Jazz Vibes

Oct 2025

On Thursday 4th September, the Martinborough Town Hall transformed into a stylish mid-20th century jazz club as South Wairarapa locals gathered for the much-anticipated Jazz in Martinborough Concert for Rotary.

This opener event for the annual Jazz in Martinborough festival featured the acclaimed jazz ensemble Ol’ King Cole, joined by special guest vocalist Wallace, for a night of toe-tapping rhythm and smooth melodies.

Paying tribute to the timeless sounds of Nat King’ Cole, Ol’ King Cole took the audience on a nostalgic journey through the golden era of jazz, while also weaving in other classics from the genre’s rich repertoire.

Led by Louis Thompson-Munn on piano and vocals, the band’s tight lineup included Lockie Bennett on guitar, Robert Henderson on double bass, and guest drummer Mike Jensen, who added crisp, swinging beats to the evening’s performance. Vocalist Wallace charmed the crowd with her soulful interpretations, seamlessly complementing the band’s smooth sound.

All profits from this event will support the vital work of South Wairarapa Rotary in the communities of Featherston, Martinborough, Greytown, and the wider South Wairarapa region.
