A Martinborough Tradition of Fun, Family, and Community
What began as a simple children’s birthday party nearly 15 years ago has transformed into one of Martinborough’s most beloved community traditions. The Kitcheners Annual Halloween Party is now a “must-attend” event for every child in town and, increasingly, for their parents too.
Each Labour Weekend, Bruce and Sue Sullivan open the doors of their Oxford Street home to welcome families from across Martinborough. With day cares, kindergartens, and local primary schools all on the invite list, the party has become a firm fixture on the community calendar.
Over the years, Bruce has turned decorating into an art form. Each October, new spooky accessories and creative touches appear, adding to the atmosphere of cobwebs, pumpkins, skeletons, and playful frights that fill the garden. Children arrive in wildly imaginative costumes, witches, superheroes, storybook characters, and home-made creations that show just how much effort local families put into the day.
Parents don’t hold back either. In fact, friendly competition has grown among the adults, with mums and dads turning up in elaborate themed outfits, often coordinating with their kids. For many families, it’s a highlight of the year to showcase not only creativity but also a sense of humour.
No Halloween party would be complete without treats, and the Kitcheners spread never disappoints. Buckets of lollies keep the kids grinning, while the adults appreciate the chance to relax with a beer or a glass of bubbles.
“This is our way of showing appreciation to the community that’s supported us over the years,” says Bruce. “It’s about love, laughter, and giving back.”
But beyond the sugar rush and fancy dress, the true heart of the event lies in connection. For young families new to Martinborough, the Halloween Party often provides the first chance to meet other parents and feel part of the close-knit community. For long-time locals, it’s a chance to reconnect, swap stories, and celebrate together.
In just two short hours, the Kitcheners Halloween Party captures everything that makes Martinborough special: creativity, hospitality, and a strong sense of whānau. “It has grown into an event that people genuinely don’t want to miss,” says Nadia. “Families now mark their calendars well in advance.”
“What started with a birthday cake and a bunch of children has blossomed into a tradition that brings the whole town together,” adds Christy-Anne. It’s living proof that when people open their homes and hearts, community spirit thrives.
And for Martinborough, that spirit looks a lot like Halloween – colourful, playful, a little spooky, and filled with joy. So, if you’re a skeleton with nobody to hang out with, grab your best costume and crawl along to the Kitcheners Kids Halloween Party on Saturday, October 25th, 32 Oxford Street, Martinborough, from 1pm – 3pm. Tricks are limited, but the treats (and the fun) are abundant.
