The Star Book Review

Sept 2025

Runt and the
Diabolical Dognapping

In 2022 we met Runt, a sassy little farm dog who turned up in the town of Upson Downs and became a menace, stealing food from stores and effortlessly evading capture by the local constabulary.

Runt was eventually taken under the wing of Annie Shearer, aged 9, who discovered Runt’s amazing skills in agility. When their home comes under threat from a rich landowner, Runt and Annie beat the odds and save the day at the Krumpets Dog Show in London. The delightful story of kindness, overcoming obstacles and being true to yourself sold 150,000 copies and has been made into a movie.

The story was too good not to continue. The sequel, ‘Runt and the Diabolical Dognapping’ is out in time for Christmas and is bigger and better than before! Upson Downs is getting ready for a huge dog show that they were invited to host courtesy of Runt and Annie doing so well in London. The town’s hopes for economic recovery are pinned on this show but with only a week to go, the star of the show, disappears!

Annie and her family throw themselves into solving the mystery of their missing dog. With twists and turns, clues and suspects, challenges and determination, the story is funny and bursting with heart. When all else is dragons, unicorns and wizards, this is a story of a girl and her dog, her (slightly) weird family and a small town. It is the kind of story that reminds us of our humanity and allows children and adults alike to simply enjoy a good book. Excellent for independent readers 8-12 years or for reading out loud to the
whole family.

Available in October at your local bookshop.
