Martinborough Rugby Football Club (MRFC) is proud to announce it has officially taken back the management of the town’s community gym, revitalising it as an inclusive, accessible hub for health and wellbeing in the South Wairarapa.
The gym, located at the Martinborough Rugby Club grounds, is now run by the Club but very much for the community. In addition to being a place where locals can train and build fitness, the gym plays a valuable role in supporting our frontline heroes – Martinborough’s Fire Brigade, Medical First Responders, and Search and Rescue volunteers – all of whom benefit from the facility in maintaining their physical readiness.
“The gym is an incredible asset that we believe should serve everyone,” said Club President Michael Bing. “MRFC is the apart of community and for the community. It’s great to see the gym looking fantastic and being used by people of all ages and stages. That’s exactly what it’s here for.”
Key to the success of the gym’s new chapter is Claire Murphy-Klempel, a locally based and recently qualified personal trainer who has stepped up to manage the space. Claire has a long-standing involvement in the Club, a love of physical activity, and a strong connection to the community. A proud mum and doting grandmother to two grandchildren, Claire brings both professionalism and heart to her role.
Under Claire’s guidance, the gym has introduced regular group fitness classes throughout the week, catering to a wide range of fitness levels. In addition, yoga classes are offered on Sundays for a small added fee – giving locals a chance to work on both strength and mindfulness in a friendly environment.
The gym operates on community-friendly pricing, making it accessible for individuals, families, and frontline workers alike. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete, just starting your fitness journey, or looking for a supportive place to stay active with friends, the Martinborough Community Gym has something to offer.
Michael Bing says the re-opening is just one part of a bigger vision. “We see this as a step towards a healthier, stronger Martinborough – not just physically, but socially too. This is a space where people can connect, train, and feel part of something.”
