Aratoi “A Million Pixels”

Aug 2025

New exhibitions open this Winter at Aratoi, Wairarapa Museum of Art and History.

The biennial exhibition “A Million Pixels” from the Wairarapa Camera Club takes us on a journey across New Zealand. The Camera Club encourages people to grow and share their photography skills with each other. The Club meets monthly and runs workshops and competitions, with guest experts giving feedback and sharing their ideas and skills.

Many previous club members have won a wide range of New Zealand and international photographic awards.   Club President, Mark Beatty says he is delighted at the range of subject material in the exhibition collection and seeing quite a few photographers challenging themselves with exhibiting for the first time.

Two of the exhibitions show off the eclectic nature of Aratoi’s collection.

In the Social History Gallery,  “Let’s have a Tea Party!”  Inspired by Aratoi’s collection the exhibition explores the similarities and differences in parties through the ages, told through textiles, objects and artworks.

Keteparaha displays some of the tools from the Collection. From fishing to gardening, weaving to tattooing, Māori developed a useful and clever toolkit to help them in day-to-day life.

Learn more about these intriguing items and what they were used for.
