Latest speed limit consultationends shortly

July 2025

Thursday July 17 is the end date for South Wairarapa’s second speed management plan public consultation period.

The so-called local reconsult was required after central Government canned all previous work to improve district road safety by imposing new rules which overrode the previous requirements.

The latest consultation is on council proposals for permanent speed reductions on urban fringe (aka peri-urban) roads, coastal roads and unsealed roads.

The proposals are basically the previously-agreed speed reductions on the nominated roads, dusted off and re-submitted after government nixed the earlier proposal.

“We want those who call South Wairarapa home and visitors alike to be safe when using our streets and roads,” council infrastructure lead councillor Aidan Ellims said in a statement.

“That means we need the right speeds on the right roads for all road users, whether you are walking to the shops, biking to school, or driving to work.”

The new 2024 Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits law provides the framework for managing road speeds, including how proposals are developed, shared, and certified.

The Rule resulted in some significant amendments to the council’s earlier plan, and created the need to reconsult communities before it could implement speed limit changes.
