Recloaking with natives

May 2025

A recent plant clearing session tea break at the group’s Hua-angarua riverside planting.

South Wairarapa Biodiversity Group plans several planting and clearing events over the  next five months, putting back native plant species on sandy beaches and riversides.

“We are planning to have our activities on the 4th Sunday of each month at 9:30 a.m,” group leader Jane Lenting said.

  • Sunday 25 May – Ōkorewa Lagoon, Lake Ferry – plant release (clearing grass and weeds from young native plants, adding protectors where needed);
  • Sunday 22 June – Ōkorewa Lagoon – infill planting;
  • Sunday 27 July – Hua-angarua riverside infill planting, John’s Road near Ponatahi Bridge, Martinborough;
  • Sunday 24 Aug. – Ōkorewa Lagoon – Pīngao planting between the lagoon and beach;
  • Sunday 28 Sept. – Hua-angarua riverside planting and plant release.

And no, it’s not all hard work!
