Going, going, Gone! Auction for Aratoi

May 2025

Aratoi is many things – it is a museum of art and history, but it’s also a place that offers insights into the world around us, connects communities, inspires creativity, showcases local talent, challenges our thinking and protects our heritage for future generations – all on a very limited budget.

As a charitable trust Aratoi relies on the support of very generous people and organisations to operate, with its key funders Masterton District Council and Masterton Trust Lands Trust.

However, some 40% of the funding for Aratoi still comes from in-house fundraising.

“We are so grateful for everyone who supports our important work,” said Aratoi Director Sarah McClintock. “This year we are excited to hold a special art auction to help raise much-needed funds.”

This Wairarapa social event of the season will be on the evening of Friday, 13 June in Aratoi’s Main Gallery with renowned auctioneer Ray Spencer in charge.

With more than 50 artworks from local and nationally significant artists, the auction will appeal to a wide range of art collectors. A beautiful illustrated catalogue is also being produced to go alongside the auction. Aratoi staff, the Aratoi Regional Trust Board, Friends of Aratoi and committed supporters are hard at work to ensure the auction succeeds.

The auction will offer a range of art works – from big ticket items by internationally known artists Dame Robin White and Milan Mrkusich, to more accessible pieces of art from regionally well-known artists.

“The works will be available to view before the auction, so you have time to look and pick out your favourite and even put in an absentee bid if you can’t make it on the night,” Sarah McClintock said. “The support of artists from across the country for this auction has been humbling and we are excited to be able to offer people the chance to own these incredible artworks.”

“It promises to be a fun night – with music, delicious food and fabulous art on show – we will be putting on quite the event!” Aratoi’s Auction will be a ticketed event, with limited tickets available ($75.00).
