A family forced to flee the Nazis

Mar 2025

South Wairarapa Rebus Club’s guest speaker on 28 March is Nevina Clemerson, author of the novel “There was a garden in Nuremberg.”

Her presentation, “Silences and Serendipity,” covers her research for the book which is grounded in the experience of her maternal grandparents and includes photos of documents, maps, places and people.

When the Nazis came to power in 1933 her mother was 11 years old; the family left Germany in 1939 – that’s the story in the book. She will discuss the controversy regarding fact and fiction in historical writing noting that it was important to her to describe the historical background precisely, while giving herself the freedom to expand on the feelings and thoughts of family members.

The club’s final 2024 meeting was a delightful luncheon at Club Carterton on Friday 6 December and the first meeting for 2025 was a picnic on the outskirts of Martinborough on 24 January. We had our Annual General Meeting on 28 February and our guest speaker after the AGM was Paul Mallinson on photography of the night sky.
