Since March 2024, Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art & History has brought interesting pieces from their collection to display in our libraries as pop-up exhibits.
Previous exhibits have included a Victorian writing box, a county flashing lamp, and a painting of daffodils by Carterton-born artist Marion Tylee.
It’s Martinborough Library’s turn to host the latest exhibit, a collection of glazed ceramics by local artist Lei Hawea.
Featuring three shearers and a woolshed, this exhibit reflects our long history of sheep farming. The first flock of sheep was driven from Wellington onto the Wairarapa plains in 1844, making our region one of the country’s first to move towards pastoral farming.
Since its installation in December, people of all ages have enjoyed viewing the exhibit. The display is low enough for children to get a really good look at the beautifully made figurines.
Adults, too, have been charmed: “They have a sense of movement and quiet industry. I really enjoy looking at them.”
This exhibit is available only until 8 March. Don’t miss out.
