Martinborough Lawn Tennis Club: Xmas Day Tourney

By Tennis Writer Feb 2025

Christmas Morning tennis exercise group at the nets.

The prematch excitement was palpable. The grass had been cut to Wimbledon standard.

The annual Wednesday Whackers Wimborough tournament was about to start at the bright-eyed time of 08.00 on Christmas Day for a healthy 15 of us.

Dress codes were adhered to perfectly (the colour that identifies Christmas for you).

The WORLD RENOWNED ‘Andrea’ pairings system was used, and we were off.

It was a point scoring tournie, not a knockout, so we all kept playing until the turkey and aubergine had to go into the oven, and the strawberries placed on the pavlova.

Every 15 minutes Sven hooted his hooter, and scores were delivered to Samantha who noted it all on the digital display board with the laser pen.

Then everyone moved half a court anticlockwise, and we played with and against new partners. It was 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw and zero for a loss. Some scored lots of points and some scored a few less.

At the award ceremony, the delight on everyone’s faces was obvious as we all got to choose our trophy.

Sponsors were few and far between, Porsche let us down, so all players were asked to bring something they hadn’t bought within the past year.

All in all, it was considered a reasonable success and a bit of fun.
