Late Report from the Provinces: Santa at Ruakokopatuna

Feb 2025

Santa dodged the Christmas storms.

Atmospheric pressure was dropping and the cumulo nimbus clouds (meaning: dense, towering, vertical clouds), were getting thicker and thicker, darker and darker. There was a crack of thunder, a flash of lightning, the door opened and in came Santa having parked his Hilux reindeers as close to the hall as possible. Thirteen millimetres of rain in 13 seconds but Santa was bone dry.

Every child got a prezzie. It really is amazing not only how Santa knows how many children are going to be present, but he also knows exactly what each person wants. Santa is so clever.

Community events are wonderful. They are a real time of togetherness that nurtures local community feeling. The table was laid, and the local chefs had been conjuring up a Michelin 4-star standard banquet. Salads, cole slaw, barbequed meat, pomme de terre et l’onion salad, bacon avec les oeufs pie and SAMOSAS, of course.

The best of the Wairarapa’s wine flowed freely into thimble-sized glasses from the wonderful Martinborough “SOCIAL CRUST,” _ someone had already taken the bucket size glass.

Conversation flowed as freely as the beer as stories of how different Christmas with Santa Claus was in Lapland. By now Santa was bouncing through the clouds, fighting through the turbulence on his way to his next gig before heading, funnily enough – back to Lapland.

Just how does he manage it so magically for all those lucky children? A question to ponder.
