Rebecca Kneale is a very recent addition to town, a Tauranga girl, who has migrated south to Martinborough.
Educated at Otumoetai College, Rebecca left school to experience overseas work and travel. In London she worked for an architectural firm.
“It was a time when scanners were just being introduced. My role was to implement the coding systems and create subcategories for electrical, mechanical and interior designers so they could be accessed by date order and filed for our staff of 30+ to easily access. It was a new learning curve for me, but it was fun, and I really enjoyed it.
“When we returned to New Zealand we continued working in the construction industry, designing, building and selling homes in Auckland. An interlude followed when I became a stay-at-home mother. Having three children under five, life became very busy.
“We were constantly moving. I can’t even tally up the number of houses we lived in,” laughs Rebecca.
“My father was involved in the construction industry starting Jennian Homes in Auckland, so it seemed quite a normal way of life.
“When we returned to Tauranga, I ran an interior design and personal styling business. I would visit people in their homes to advise them on art and soft furnishings. I would accompany them shopping, helping them to sort out their wardrobes. I would advise them on colours, and styles to fit their body types and personalities.
“It was highly rewarding because you were helping people to feel confident and good about themselves,” she said.
“Another move and now I am in Martinborough with my youngest son, and my partner Callum. “When I arrived in Martinborough I looked for a job but there was nothing available. It was time to bite the bullet. I am now the proud owner of what used to be “Jessica’s Living Room.”
“I have renamed it ‘Roam’ because it seems that when visitors come to Martinborough they like to roam around The Square and investigate all the shops. It is a treasure trove with so many fascinating items.
“There is the jewellery, recipe books, wallets, luggage, hats, candles, accessories, shoes, glassware, clothing and lots of quirky things are all part of the ever-changing mix.
“I am already planning changes, with some different local suppliers lined up. New pottery and beautiful ceramic flowers will be coming into the store next month along with freshly cut Peonies.
“I am looking forward to introducing more merino possum knitwear, selling clothing for the 10-to-16-year-old age group, and making the store equally interesting for both men and women.”
Roam will open 7 days a week.
