Help plant next-gen community trees

By Angela Brown, Community Board Sept 2023

Spring is in the air – a great time to get out and connect with your community and get back into the garden. Here is an opportunity to do both.

The Community Board recently allocated funds for a tree planting project at the Golf Course – a space which will be available for the community to visit.

A planting day is set for 15 September from 9 a.m., so come along and bring a spade.

A selection of these new plants have been sourced locally from the Featherston Native nursery – Pae tū Mōkai o Tauira.

The Martinborough Tree Group organised a visit to the nursery, and it was amazing to see what they

have achieved. Their dedicated team collect the locally-sourced seeds by hand and nurture them until they are ready to be returned to the land. They are not generally open to the public but do look out for their next open day or support one of their planting events.

If trees and planting are not your thing there are plenty of other ways to get involved with your community. A connected community is a resilient community.

We held the first in our series of Resilience workshops in August, presented by Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO) and supported by SWDC. Despite the terrible weather 20 people attended this event to learn more about Home Preparedness and the role of the Community Emergency Hub.

Two more events are scheduled for September:

on 6 September WREMO is offering a Leadership Skills in Disaster workshop;

on the 30 September a Community Emergency Response Practice Day will be held at the Waihinga Centre from 11 – 1 p.m.

A Community Emergency Hub is not the kit, nor the location. It’s the people who come together to look after each other, and the more people that understand in advance how they can help, the stronger it will be.

The emergency water tanks everyone ordered are now available for pick up.

If you have ordered one and not yet received an invoice contact the council to check. They fit easily into the back of most vehicles.

Our next “Meet the Community Board Session” is on Saturday 9 September 10 -12 noon at the Waihinga Centre. This is an opportunity to come and raise any concerns and ask questions.
