Most of Wharekaka is now dark and silent but on Monday afternoons, in the dining room, it is bright and busy.

That’s thanks to the energy and commitment of Matt Wilson, a brain injury survivor, who was looking to do something meaningful with his time.

When Wharekaka closed he realised that the villa residents no longer had access to the activities they previously enjoyed.     With the support of Trish Bradshaw of the Laura Ferguson Trust and The Masonic Villages Trust, he decided to step up and create a fun, social opportunity that could also include the wider community. From small beginnings it’s growing every week.

The session last week included 3 new arrivals in town as well a good sprinkling of long time locals. The activity for the day was Bingo and while rewards for winning might not make you rich but they could certainly expand your waistline.

If you would like to join this friendly group, why not come along next Monday and enjoy whatever new entertainments Matt has dreamt up.

Wharekaka Dining Room (please come in via the door directly into the dining room, on the western side of the building off Sackville Street) 1.30pm. Gold coin entry which goes to Masonic Trust for use of the facility.

You can contact Matt on 022 568 6352 or matto1i@outlook.com.

The Laura Ferguson Trust is an independent charity providing residential, rehabilitation, respite and recreational services for adults with physical or neurological impairments.
