Little action at the Community garden at the moment due to Wet! Wet! Wet!

This is due to a large extent to the location of the garden on the downward slope of Oxford Street ( as those of you who live in this area will appreciate), and of course the ever present rain.

Our top crops are proving to be our saviour in the planting boxes, and have all taken well, due in no small part to the fact that despite the rain the soil has maintained a relatively warm temperature. In order to project forward to some continuity of crops we have sewn broad bean and pea crops among the top crops. This affords them some shelter and protection from the wetness. Fingers crossed this will have positive results.

Meanwhile , there will be plenty of Jerusalem artichokes delivered to the Larder over the next few weeks. The Brussel sprouts have had a couple of frosts on them , and are progressing well, and there are still a few “Magic Mini” cabbages to harvest. Leeks are looking good and should be at the Larder from later this month.

We would love to have more mulch if anyone has excess, we would love it….perhaps if you are cutting back trees and have excessive chip. Unfortunately , we missed out on pea straw this year, and seem to be having difficulty in securing dags which we have found to be excellent in past years. Any contribution would be excellent. Just drop it at the MCG , 51 Oxford Street.

We have recently invested in safety guards for all our waratahs…more reliable than the old pots that we have made do with in the past. Highly recommend these as a ‘rip’ from one of those waratahs is a very painful event .We have also invested in netting for our brassicas that actually fits the planters: again highly recommend a fitted net rather than miles of net draping over the garden and providing another health and safety nightmare.

Its not raining right now, so here’s hoping for a few dry days!
