Tribute to Mike Beckett

It was with great sadness that we heard that Mike had passed away. We remember him with great fondness and acknowledge the kindness he has always shown to First Church over many years. Mike always painted our Kirk Fair and Book Fair wooden signs, painting out and repainting the many changes of dates. The Book Fair and Kirk Fair flyers were inserted in the relevant issues of the Star. Mike would bring the Star to the Church hall; the team would madly insert the flyers and Mike would bundle the Stars into the delivery numbers and off he would go. We always received reminders a week before the Star was due to be published to prevent holding up the paper. The column would have to be ready on the deadline (or just after)!! It is these acts of kindness and community spirit that were Mike to a ‘T’. To Anne and family our condolences on your loss. RIP Mike you will be sorely missed.

As we leave both Easter and ANZAC Day behind us, we reflect on our church service on the 23rd April, where we reflected on the continuing unrest in many countries and the impact this is having, especially on women and children. Our prayers and thoughts go out to everyone who has families and friends in these countries. One of the hymns we sang was,

“We Pay Respect” unknown author, and here are two of the verses from this.

With open hearts we come this ANZAC Day

To pay respect to those we can’t repay;

As we recall, with sadness and with pride,

We voice our tribute tears can never hide.

As we depart, as ceremonies cease,

Let us resolve to live our lives in peace,

We can embrace this as God’s only way,

Let love be born again this ANZAC day.

What is a Labyrinth?

The Labyrinth is an ancient archetypal symbol representing ‘wholeness, healing, inclusiveness and community.’ It is a divine imprint, found in numerous faith traditions around the world.

Labyrinths are usually single pathways that lead to the centre and then back out again, retracing the same path.

A Labyrinth is a sacred space, it provides a quiet, safe place for the intuitive symbolic mind to come forth and be more present. It invites you, the walker to set aside your cares and concerns and open your mind and heart.

To quote the Labyrinth Society – ‘To walk the Labrinth is a pilgrimage to discover something about ourselves. The destination is not important, the journey is.‘

Come and join us and walk the Labyrinth.
