Martinborough Wine and Food Society

By Sue Delamare May 2023

The Martinborough Wine and Food Society had a great evening at the TOP PUB in Greytown.

The unusual highlight was the Ostrich Burger, more about that later.

We had three starters to choose from, an organic salad with pears poached in red wine with candied cashew nuts, crispy Calamari on a bed of

salad with roasted garlic aioli and finally Italian bread and a trio of dips with cured meats.

We were allocated our own pleasant room at the

back of the pub. The wine list was broad based and interesting with a great mix of local and international wines with a good selection of beers and spirits and non-alcoholic drinks.

The mains were a choice of a Mediterranean chicken dish, a fish dish in white wine sauce with seasonal vegetables and an Ostrich Burger with roasted pistachio, smoked gouda, cherry BBQ sauce, crème fraiche, lettuce and tomato. I had never tried ostrich meat before, The meat is a bit like premium beef in taste and texture, but it has a more robust and savoury taste and quickly absorbs flavours and marinades. This burger was excellent and had a mild sweet flavour profile.

Desserts were panna cotta or chocolate mousse.

A convivial time was had by all and a new flavour experience for some.
