‘Have you ever wondered about that old Mah Jong set in your attic or deep in a cupboard? It belonged to your mum, your granny or great auntie. You may have seen the game being played in China, with frantic rattling of the tiles and fevered betting. Or you might be old enough to recall your set being used, with pleasant afternoon teas, but maybe you never learnt how to play yourself.
Here’s an opportunity to learn to play the modern western game, and help fundraise for the Wharekaka Masonic Trust Meals on Wheels.
The Wharekaka Auxiliary and friends are proposing a half day workshop Mah Jong for Beginners in May or June, to be held at Wharekaka. The cost of $25 will include an afternoon or morning tea, tuition in the basic game and the opportunity to dust off your set and learn what the tiles mean.
If there is sufficient interest, this could be extended over subsequent weeks to enable skills to develop, and to test out if there is interest in an ongoing Mah Jong group.
Initial expressions of interest please, to Lesley Daly lmdaly@xtra.co.nz, 0211205615 if you are interested’
