Featherston Wrestlers hit the international stage!

May 2023

Oceania Championships are held each year. They are an Olympic Games criteria event required to enable possible selection in the New Zealand team.

Representing Featherston Amateur Wrestling Club at this international event, which will be held in Sydney in August, are Angus Read and Nate George who will compete in the U17, 47 and 57kg freestyle wrestling.

Both wrestlers have worked diligently towards this selection, training together and attending national competitions and training camps over a number of years.  They have benefited from the expert guidance of head trainer Jeremy Sargent, a former New Zealand representative.

“As a club we couldn’t be prouder of their achievements over the years, as part of our teams and as individuals. We know both wrestlers take strong club values onto the international stage and will be excellent ambassadors for our community,” says Jeremy Sargent, Club Coach and President.

Wrestling is not a well-funded Sport in New Zealand so the club will be fundraising and seeking sponsors to support the travel & tournament costs of the wrestlers.

Our first fundraiser for Nate and George will be an Ambrose golf tournament on 12th May at the Martinborough Golf Course. Volunteers, sponsors and assistance with raffles is needed.

If you can help or have any suggestions or enquiries, please get in touch at featherstonamateurwrestling@gmail.com.

Our next crop of wrestlers is progressing well with the numbers in our junior class strong under the leadership of Chris Sargent who ensures a lot of fun with training mixed in. Our tri-series of tournaments with local clubs Tawa & Waikanae will kick off in Featherston on 14th May.  It’s not too late to join either our junior or senior classes if you want to build confidence, develop core strength and balance in an inclusive friendly environment.

The Club’s AGM is scheduled for 7pm on 26 April at Waimarie Restaurant, Fox Street, Featherston.  We always welcome members of our community to come along.

The annual tri-tournaments with Tawa & Waikanae kick off this year on 14 May at the Club.  A great chance for our junior class to put their learnings into action.  Again a few volunteers help these run smoothly so please sing out if you can help.

The last event to update you on is the bi-annual club fundraiser Trailbike ride on 28 May at Yeronga, Pirinoa.  We are lucky to have the support of Sargent Motorcycles and have we asked you to volunteer for this one yet???
