Wharekaka is delighted to announce that we have been successful in obtaining a contract through Te Whatu Ora Wairarapa, to supply meals on wheels at a subsidised price for those people who qualify. Wharekaka will be providing this service to people living in the Martinborough, Greytown and Featherston areas.
Wharekaka has been running a meals on wheels service as a stand alone operation since our residential care had to close. The Wharekaka Auxiliary is co-ordinating over 40 volunteers to deliver the meals in conjunction with the Featherston Community Centre and the Red Cross in Greytown. This service will continue but will be expanded.
Subsidized meals on wheels are available to eligible people living at home and who, because of age, illness or disability, are unable to prepare their own meals and maintain nutrition. To qualify, recipients have to be assessed by their primary health care provider, or by FOCUS (Needs Assessment Service Coordination team), a community health service or as part of hospital discharge planning.
For those who qualify – the meals will be able to be provided Monday to Friday, with the recipient paying for half the meal and Te Whatu Ora paying a subsidy per meal.
The meals include protein and vegetables in the main course as well as a dessert. Some dietary requirements can be catered for.
If you think you could be eligible or know of someone who could be, please contact your local primary health care provider and you will be assessed and passed onto Wharekaka.
Our meals on wheels service to existing clients continues and people who are not eligible for a subsidised meal are very welcome to join this service.
Wharekaka would like to acknowledge the work of the Auxiliary and all the volunteers in delivering this service. Thank you for doing such a tremendous job.
