Geological Field trip to the Tora coast

By Joe Howells Feb 2023

Following up on the talk by Climate Paleontologist Chris Hollis in Martinborough last month the Aorangi Restoration Trust is organizing a day Field Trip to the Tora Coast so folk can have a look at the amazing material that Chris discussed in his talk first hand. Chris will lead a day tour showing us the points of interest and discussing how they were discovered, and the science behind it all.

It was a very turbulent place At Manurewa Point, Tora, about 66 million years ago. Several massive tsunamis resulting from the impact from the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs smashed into the ancient New Zealand coastline and the backwashing material went in a big tumble back out to sea. Some of the remnants of this dramatic event can still be seen in the coastline today.

A bus will depart from the Green Jersey yard at 9am and return about 5pm on Sunday 19th February. The cost for the trip is $120 per head and please bring your own lunch.

The following future talks have now been scheduled so put these dates in your diary please:

  • Sunday 19th March – Ngāti Kahungunu & Rangitāne kaumatua Ra Smith will speak on “Wairarapa, Te Karu o Te Ika” – The history of human settlement on the Kawa Kawa (Palliser Bay) Coast
  • Sunday April 16th Kate Clarke – Earthquake Geologist, Paleoseismology Team Leader GNS Science will speak on “the Raised Beaches of the Tora Coast

All proceeds of these events go to support the Aorangi Restoration Trust. By 2045, the Aorangi Restoration Trust aims to have restored the Aorangi Forest and its surrounds to the state where:

  • The indigenous forest, coastal, and marine ecosystems are healthy,
  • Its streams, rivers, and wetlands are clean and abundantly inhabited,
  • There are ecosystem services that benefit the rural and urban economies of South Wairarapa and offer places for recreation for the wider Wellington region.

The Aorangi Trust welcomes volunteers to work on the predator trapping lines around the Aorangi Forest.
