By Chief Fire Officer Jake Hawkins Feb 2023

2022 – Was a defining year for the Martinborough Volunteer Fire Brigade, the first full year for our Medical First Response Unit, along with our usual calls for assistance, resulting in the busiest ever year in our 120+ year history.

TOTAL NUMBER BRIGADE CALLS for 2022 – 249

Medical First Responses – 145. Medical Response with Fire – 31. 10 x Cardiac arrests

Fire Responses – 106

Fire Response are made up of :18 x Alarm activations, 12 x Vegetation Fires

28 x Motor Vehicle Crashes, 14 x Structure Fires, 1 x Hazardous Substance

21 x Special Service events (Flooding, Trees Down)

A huge shout out to our highly dedicated team of Volunteer Firefighters and Medical Responders, who continue to support the Brigade’s operations, day and night, making themselves available to support our Community.

The other people we cannot forget to mention are our volunteers families and employers who have frequent interruptions to their lives, meals and operations to ensure we continue our responses.

We have three of our new recruits off to the National Training Centre, good luck John, Corina and Jason, and Firefighter Aaron Huddleston is currently away at NTC having joined FENZ as a member of the career paid staff undertaking his career recruit course, joining an increasing number of members and former members who have progressed into the career staff.

This year we farewelled two of our Station Officers, Matt McQuaid and Bradley Aldridge, who have left us during 2022, and thank them for their contribution to the Brigade and Community during their service.

Our Emergency Medical training and response partner, Wellington Free Ambulance, has confirmed training dates for our next batch of Medical First Responders to undertake and start their additional 200 hour journey to become Medical First Responders (note all Firefighters undertake an advanced medical response course as part of their training).

We start back into to our meeting/training schedule on the 31st if you want to know more about joining us.
