Pumped Up and Getting Ready to Go

By Lyle Griffiths Nov 2022

The Martinborough Pump Park Project, to be located in Considine Park, is coming closer to becoming a reality.

There have been months of extensive consultation on this community driven project.

Charlotte Harding, Sue Sullivan, and Pat Church have consulted parents and children; the Considine Park User Group; the Council; Community Board and Asset and Services Group. Research has been conducted to discover what makes a Pump Park successful and how it can be constructed to be inclusive for all ages.

“After having been involved in supporting the Playground for the Waihinga Centre I realised that although this is an incredible asset there are still gaps for the older kids in the community,” says Charlotte.

“Sue and Pat were also looking for alternative activities to engage older children on behalf of the Martinborough Youth Trust.”

The Pump Park will be a 220-metre track with jumps, rollers and large bermed corners. The course will test all age levels from 5 years new to biking and keen to rock and roll around to a biker taking the course at speed. The track is suitable for bikes, boards, and scooters. A separate circuit will cater for smaller children on balance bikes.

It will be located next to the swimming pool at Considine Park on the site of the present cricket shed.

Now Council has given approval the green light is set to Go so it’s the nitty gritty of fundraising to bring this community project to fruition.

Auckland Designer, Byron Scott from Trail Pro has been hired to design the course.

“Some local contractors have already offered their support to assist with the construction, and this will certainly help to contain the costs, says Sue. Others have already pledged donations to contribute. The total cost of the project is $280,000. While we have received acknowledgement that some money may be contributed from the Youth Grant and the Pain Farm Trust we are going to need a lot more support.

If you would like to support the project with donations or offers of assistance see Sue Sullivan at Kitchener’s Dairy or write to Charlotte Harding via email nzlottie@hotmail.com. Or you can donate directly to the Martinborough Youth Trust https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/martinborough-pump-track-project

Construction is planned to begin next April/May. If anyone has accommodation available at a reduced rental for the month of April for a small team of four, please consult with Charlotte Harding.
