Parkinson’s is a degenerative disease with no cure at present although research is moving is leaps and bounds. There are approximately 112 people diagnosed with Parkinson’s in the Wairarapa, where very good support systems are in place both for those with Parkinson’s and their caregivers.
The Parkinson’s Family Support group is aimed at providing an opportunity to meet fellow caregivers, chat over light refreshments to discuss problems, solutions and anything in between.
Being a caregiver can be fulfilling, but it’s a position that comes with obligations that can profoundly affect your well-being. As the needs of the person you are caring for expands, you may find that you have no time for yourself.
As a caregiver, it may often feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, but help is just around the corner in the form of family and friends, but also from our support group. This support group is a great opportunity to spend time with other people and receive different perspectives for problem-solving.
It is also a place for other family members to come to get answers to questions they may have, and to help them understand the Parkinson’s journey the whole family are on.
We hold these meeting bi-monthly throughout the year. Our next meeting is Thursday November 17th starting at 6.30pm for a Pot Luck Tea. So if you feel you would like a bit of extra support in your Parkinson’s journey or just want a natter with fellow caregivers, then please contact Roslyn on 06-379-6044 or 027-264-8623.
