Martinborough Charity Fun Ride 2022 On Yer Bike

Oct 2022

The popular 27-year old Martinborough Charity Fun Ride is back, after Covid restrictions forced its cancellation last year.

On Sunday 30 October 2022, Martinborough’s Rugby ground will be awash with lycra-clad, cleat-clattering cyclists.

South Wairarapa Rotary Club organisers are looking forward to welcoming riders from far and wide for the race, back in action for its 27th year. The race was founded by the late Geoff Lankow, a national champion rider himself, and Martinborough resident.

“ We took the opportunity to refresh some aspects of this very popular ride,” said Cam Sutherland for organisers, the South Wairarapa Rotary Club.

“Electric bikes are included for the first time, for example. For the serious riders there is a new longer route up through Gladstone Road and back to Martinborough”.

To cater for cyclists of all levels, there are three different tracks: 48 km, 67km and ‘the big one’ 115km. This goes twice round the circuit from Martinborough up to Gladstone Road and back again.

Route details and registrations are live now on www.mcfr.co.nz .

Organiser Cam Sutherland says “It’s vital for cyclists and road users to be highly aware that these roads are open, so the road rules have to be followed.

“We stress that these roads are often narrow and winding, so cyclists must “think safety”, and stay on their own side of the road. We put road signs up to warn drivers too.

Cycle Science is the race’s major sponsor, contributing three $500 prizes. South Wairarapa Rotary will donate all the proceeds from the event to the Wellington Children’s Hospital.
