Parkinson’s Awareness

Sept 2022

A diagnosis of Parkinson’s is a life-altering event but not a life-threatening one. It is a chronic and progressive condition with no known cure (at present), although research is moving in leaps and bounds. There are over 110 people diagnosed with Parkinson’s in the Wairarapa. The local Parkinson’s Action Group, along with volunteers and the community, endeavours to help those living with Parkinson’s by providing support groups, activities and social events.

The red tulip is the international symbol of Parkinson’s. On the weekend of 1st and 2nd October Luke Gardner will be opening up Longbush Cottage for its’ annual tulip festival. This annual festival is a celebration of the majestic tulip and the return of Spring. Luke has planted over 6500 bulbs from 50 varieties this year into different “garden rooms” of colour-themed displays. For further information please visit his website, www.longbushcottage.co.nz

Parkinson’s Wairarapa volunteers will be assisting Luke over the weekend, helping to man the parking area. We will also have a stand in the garden providing tea/coffee and cake, along with information about Parkinson’s and the support we provide.

Anyone requiring further information about Parkinson’s in the Wairarapa please contact the local Action Group by email, wai.parkinsons@gmail.com, visit our stand at the Longbush Cottage Tulip Festival, watch out for us at one of these supermarkets during September or check us out on the Parkinson’s NZ website.
