I am ready to lead the new 2022 Council. After 4 years attending meetings and committees, reading reports, commenting, and participating from the sidelines, I’ve developed a knowledge of Council processes, local issues and future reforms.
I recently attended the national conference for Local Government NZ. I am aware of the reforms and issues ahead and begun to develop good relationships with contacts from other regions.
We are at a watershed moment in local government. The old power and control model must change to one of co-operation and partnership based on building good relationships across government and the community. I’m collaborative, respecting diverse contributions, seeking and building on ideas from partners. I’ll ensure Council puts our community at the centre of decisions as we address big challenges such as water, roading, amenities and government reforms. We’ll also assess new opportunities for growth and improved services.
I won’t have all the answers, but I know that careful listening and two or more heads kanohi ā kanohi, will achieve better outcomes for our community.
I’ll call upon my senior management experience in finance, performance management, communications and project management. Moreover, I bring common sense.
I will build on the work of past Councils and while I believe we need to review costs, agree priorities are sound and ensure we have value for money from our current strategies, I will recognise and celebrate the things that are already working well.
I began te reo study at Pae tū Mōkai o Tauira in 2019. It is important to me to continue te reo, build awareness of tikanga and my understanding of te ao Māori and obligations under te Tiriti. The representation review this triennium will address Māori wards and representation.
Ric and I moved to the South Wairarapa in 2000 and established small businesses in organic produce, retail and hospitality. I have enjoyed my involvement in the Volunteer Fire Brigade admin, Meals on Wheels, the Museum, Wairarapa Organics, Wharekaka, MBA, Community Garden and Cobblestones.
I am fully vaccinated and support the vaccination programme, an independent candidate with no political, lobby group, candidate affiliations.
I am optimistic about the future and as Mayor I can achieve a positive change in culture leading to more innovation, respect, creativity, inclusiveness, and a better life for us all and future generations.
