The crew for the Italian Job. Left to right. Peter Rae (cellar master) Willie Sutherland, Penny Rae, Philippa Pointon (president) and Dave Stewart (treasurer).

On Friday the 10th June we had an Italian themed evening, which latterly became known as The Italian Job, it was a while since we had done anything like this, perhaps 20 years! However, it all seemed to come together. We started the evening with a couple of plates of bruschetta, an interesting prosecco and six new guests.

Philippa provided the prosecco ‘’Riondo Collezione Millesimato Prosecco 19”. Prosecco can only come from the North East Italian wine regions of Veneto and Friuli. This was a tasty, bright, zingy wine that finished on a crisp note, it tastes dry, although it has residual sugar of 14 gms and was enjoyed by all.

Peter the cellarmaster had sourced three Italian white wines from Richie Ferguson, from “Down to Find Wines” in Greytown. They were definitely interesting and quite challenging to taste without any knowledge of a varietal reference point.

The main course consisted of a lasagne, a spinach and fetta pie, an Italian meatloaf and some Italian meatballs. This lovely spread was accompanied by three salads a caprese, a panzanella cauliflower and bread salad and a la frittedda a Sicilian dish of spring vegetables.

The accompanying red wines came from the cellar and were sangiovese, nebbiolo and chianti all aged well from the 2016 vintage.

For desserts we had tiramisu, an Italian chocolate cake and an Italian cheeseboard.

An enjoyable evening was had by all and our guests have all joined the society. Next month we are going to a restaurant. If you are interested in becoming a member of this group and wish to attend as a guest please ring Philippa on 021-43-4163 or Dave on 027-4530-475.
