Lisa Marie Ireland is a true Martinborough girl, born and bred in the Wairarapa, going to Martinborough School and then on to Kuranui College.
“I loved school. I got involved in every sporting activity I could. I played rugby, tennis, netball, and hockey and was always supported by my Mum and Dad. When I was at secondary school, I began playing golf as well, through a physical education elective. Bill Jones at the Martinborough Golf Club was our coach, and he was passionate about the game. Every week he would coach the juniors. There were about 5 or 6 of us. I still play when I can.
When the time came for me to leave school, I had no idea what I wanted to do. So many of the people I knew went to university but then ended up changing their subjects, or even then not knowing what to do. So, I decided to try a few professions out. My Mum had always worked in the hospitality industry, so I worked firstly for Bruce Congleton at the Cheese Shop, and then at Medici for 6 years, weekdays and weekends.
By 2012 I had saved enough to go overseas on a Kontiki tour. I travelled throughout Europe. 28 days and 11 countries including France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Amsterdam, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. In London I stayed and worked with Chris and Marta Wilkie at their pub in London. I was away for 5 months.
On my return I obviously needed a job. Wayne Thomas offered me one. I was hooked, so I switched to Cotter and Stevens where I could undertake my electrical apprenticeship.
In 2019 I set up my own business. I had no idea how to go about it. I bought a van and decked it out. I purchased all my own tools. I am self-certified and have a practicing licence. I renew my certificate every 2 years. I have two great employees both of whom are working towards their apprenticeships.
It’s hard work. The hours can be long. I generally start at 7.00 each morning and many days I am still working after 5.00pm. Fault finding can be challenging. Pre-wires and new builds are less demanding, but so rewarding.
I have always believed that it is important to give something back to the community so for 14 years I have volunteered for the Fire Brigade. I finished my recruiting course and became a qualified Fire Fighter, then a Senior Firefighter, a Station Officer and now am the Deputy Executive Officer. We train every Tuesday evening. I have just signed up for the next First Responders course.
Electricals definitely provide a spark to my life.
