OUR CONGRATULATIONS to Ray Lund on his 94 th birthday. Ray has been (and still is) delivering the Martinborough Star to the residents in the Western Strasbourg Street area since the first issue.

AMERICAN SOLDIERS have presented an Italian woman with a birthday cake to make up for one their predecessors stole as it was cooling on a windowsill 77 years ago. The soldiers had arrived in her village of San Pietro to fight against the German soldiers, and one of them helped themselves to the cake. The woman, who recently turned 90, said she was not expecting the cake, but clearly remembered the moment the one baked for her 13th birthday ‘disappeared’. The Guardian

NEW ZEALAND has created more residents in the last six months than any year in the last decade. Until last year the government’s ‘planning range’ for new residents amounted to an annual target of between 33,000 and 40,000.” Almost 200,000 people have applied to become residents under the fast-track visa scheme and one in four have been approved. the number of potential residents is already beyond the government’s estimates by 30,000 people.

CRUISE SHIPS are by far the biggest carbon emitters in the tourist industry. However the NZ Institute of Economic Research reports that cruise visitors provide only 3% of the tourist income.
