Martinborough Lions

By Margaret Bush, President Mar 2022

To end our year of 2021 a very enjoyable Christmas evening and dinner was held at Coney Wines, was enjoyed by all who attended.

Our Christmas  Raffle  was won by John Blundell and family.

Into our new year 2022, not a very good start for the Club, with the Covid Traffic Light in RED, having to cancel our club activities; Toast Martinborough,  The Martinborough Fair days taken from the Square to Tauherenikau Race course, with March Fair day cancelled ,Skyline Challenge  cancelled,  with Lions Convention in Gisborne also.

Never the less helping out in the community still continues.

Joe Howells and his team continued out in the Holidays checking the Preditor trap lines at Palliser Bay. During the year 2021 Lions cleared 350 Predators from the bay, this total included 29 Possums,4 Feral Cats, 9 Weasels, 11 Stoats, 83 Rats, and a staggering 164 Hedgehogs, from over 80 or so traps.

Our Lions donated 426 Man Hours of time  and funded travel of nearly 8000 Kilometres themselves over the year, often also buying the required Eggs and Bait. Many thanks to Scotty, from Scotty’s Meats for suppling many bags of scrap meat and fat.

John Bargh and helpers worked and spread Lime for a new walking track at Considine park

Lions and some of the members donated 30 Chrome Books to Martinborough School to help with children’s education.

Our first Lions meeting of the year, Wednesday 9th February had 28 members Signing in with Vaccine Passport and Social Distancing.

Our guest Speaker on the night, Mayor Alex Beijen, spoke about the State of the District, and why the Significant rate increase was necessary,  the ever increasing Central Government demands placed on Local Government, the spatial and long term plans, Drinking water, Security and other issues facing the District. He also told Lions that the council was working hard to improve the input of, and relationship with Local Iwi, and he is taking up the challenge of learning basic Te Reo Maori.

New members are always welcome to join our Lions Club. If you are interested, Contact Margaret Bush 0276685896 or Terry Blacktop on 06 3068568.
