The Greater Wellington Biosecurity team needs your help to prevent the spread blue passionflower, which is becoming more established in the Wairarapa area.

How do I identify blue passionflower?
Evergreen climbing vine that can grow up to 10 metres high Leaves: Dark green to purple shiny leaves with many fingers, usually between 3 and 9
Flowers: White with usually purple circle and yellow centre
Fruits: Deep orange and egg shaped containing many seeds
Stems: Twining stems that allow it to climb plants and structures
Roots: Spreading root system
Where found: Gardens, forest margins, waste areas and coastal areas
What’s the problem?
- Blue passionflower is a fast-growing vine that grows into the tree canopy and forms large masses that rapidly smother and replace vegetation
- Mainly invades disturbed or low-canopy forest and forest margins
What do I do?
If you suspect you have blue passionflower or have seen it somewhere in the Wellington region, please contact us and we’ll come and have a look
If it is blue passionflower, we will control it for free and record the sites location for future work
