A day at the races

Was the theme when recently the Womens Institute Wairarapa Federation held a fun day for the half yearly meeting at the Greytown Workingmen’s Club. Martinborough and Kahutara were hosts providing and serving food.

There were delegates from the Wairarapa Institutes with sister Federation members from Oroura. Institutes attending were asked to provide a jockey for afternoon entertainment.

Rules for the races: jockeys to wear caps, there was not to be any doping and there would be random drug tests.

First race ‘ Federation Executive Plus Handicap. Horses in the race: Pricess Yvonne, Gaye’s Pride, Wendy Woo, Christmas Carol and Toast Martinborough. Jolly Janet was scratched.

The race begun with a dice thrown, the number coming up were the paces the jockey took on the course with their hobby horse. Toast Martinborough (Lou Rawlinson) won the first race.

Three other races took place : Local Institute’s Maiden, Women Institutes Stakes and The President’s Cup – with national President Kay hart as one of the jockeys.

All enjoyed the event which was followed by a Fashion Parade.

The serious business of the meeting had been dealt with in the morning In opening the meeting Martinborough President Mrs Betty Finalyson welcomed those attending and presented The National President with a gift of a gift pack of Olive Oils from Ruakokopatuna.

The Nation a President explained the increased cost of the Home and Country magazine which had been running at a loss and the $2 subsidy had to be lifted. Kay Hart thanks the members for their generous contributions to various organisations and said that small amounts through the country soon add up.

Kay explained that in 2016 the Womens Institute will celebrate it’s 95 years. In November the Martinborough Institute will be celebrating it’s 87 years with a picnic in the Square.

Competitions were cut flowers, shrubs, bed socks, and gems with Martinborough winning the Jessie Hewin Tray for gems and scarves.
