South Wairarapa Rotary

Oct 2015

On the 1st of November 350+ cyclists will descend on Martinborough as South Wairarapa Rotary organise another year of the Rotary Martinborough Charity Fun Ride. This year the event will be based at the Martinborough Rugby Club alongside the traditional finish line which will also become the start line. Last year riders experienced some strong winds on the day, this year they will be looking for a calm day to further enjoy three different course lengths. Proceeds from this year’s event will be going towards Life Flight and the Blind Foundation Guide Dogs.

The club raises funds each year primarily through the running of the Martinborough Fair as well as the Rotary Martinborough Charity Fun Ride already mentioned. These funds are used mainly in the local community but some funds find their way overseas in support of organisations closely linked to Rotary.
At a recent meeting of the International Committee it was agreed to purchase a “shelter box”, these large rugged plastic boxes are stored in strategic locations around the world in readiness for the next large scale natural disaster and come filled with tents, cooking utensils, tarpaulins, tools etc. Often a team of trained Rotarians will be deployed with these boxes to help in the setting up of them, with each box being assigned to a family. Often large areas of these tents can be spotted in media coverage of disaster relief.
