THE KING IN THE CAR PARK
This month we were treated to a very interesting talk from Rob Smith who, as well as his many local commitments, is currently International Vice President of the Richard III Society.
Early this year Rob, together with several members of the New Zealand contingent of the Richard III Society, attended the re-interment of the remains of King Richard III, which were dug up from a supermarket car park in Leicester, to Leicester Cathedral.
Rob started with a brief introduction of the historical context and the circumstances of the discovery of the skeleton and verification that it was in fact the remains of King Richard III, who reigned from 1483 to 1485. We then felt that we had travelled to Leicester as we watched a series of slides with interesting commentary of the various ceremonies which took place including re-interment of the remains at Leicester Cathedral and unveiling of a tombstone.
We went on a brief tour of the locality. One of the notable features of the celebration was that all of the locals entered into the spirit of the occasion and were very hospitable and friendly to the visitors, which contributed enormously to the general enjoyment of all the people who’d travelled from all over the world to attend the events.
