Cross Creek Blues Club,

Oct 2015

Lloyd Spiegel, one of Australia’s leading Blues artists was our guest in September. It was a privilege to see him perform in a concert that exceeded all of our expectations. His command and mastery of his guitar, his songs and his stories were captivating. As Lloyd’s concert demonstrated, the $5 admission price of all of our club nights is no indication of the quality of either our visiting or local artists. We were able to host such a world-class performer with the support and sponsorship of the Tin Hut. Lisa and Mat also put Lloyd and his crew up in the very stylish rooms available upstairs at the Tin Hut.

As an Incorporated Society, our aim is to promote Blues music in the Wairarapa and we make it accessible, by keeping our admission prices low. Club members supported Lloyd: The Freda May Band; Stefan Brown; Pat McKenna and Mike Dew and Bob Cooper-Grundy and Kate Marshall.

October’s guest from over the hill was The Del Thomas Band. Following on from his CD “Driving Home Alone” Del and the band gave us a taste of his just released CD, “Shifting Sands” Del hails from Scotland and you could hear a bit of a Celtic influence in some of his original songs. As with most guitarists, he cut his teeth on the instrument by playing covers but his interest was always in a melodic playing style and in players who played for the song rather than going off on flash solos with no soul.

Elliotte Fuimaono’s baselines have anchored many shows and performers and he has recorded with others including Darren Watson, Dave Murphy, Dougal Speir, Brannigan Kaa, and Carol Bean.

A Chicago area native, Phil McLaughlin has been playing guitar since the late 70s. He has done thousands of club gigs performing at most of Chicago’s iconic Blues clubs and spent a couple of years touring France.
