Ladies Hockey Club News

July 2015

Martinborough Ladies Hockey has one team entered in the Wairarapa Women’s Hockey Competition this year. The team has got off to a flyer this season, being unbeaten in all 7 games so far. There has been one draw amongst those results, but a number of the wins have been by 3 or 4 goals. It is great to see so many familiar faces in the team, and the continuity in the players seems to be finally paying off. Well done girls, keep it up!

Hockey is becoming more and more expensive to play. The Club was required to pay an affiliation fee of $1800 to the Wairarapa Hockey Association this year, up from $1300 last season. The fee increase is due to Hockey New Zealand requiring increased contributions from each Hockey association throughout New Zealand to help fund the much improved National Black Sticks teams. The Club also pays approximately $100 per game for turf fees and umpires.

At our recent AGM the Club discussed raising our $175 annual subscription fee to help cover the increased cost of entering a team in the local competition. However, as a Club, we decided to keep the subscription fee at the same level because raising it would prevent a number of our players from participating. Instead, we decided to fundraise more and seek sponsorship.
We ran a very successful firewood raffle recently. Thank-you to Doug Clark for donating the trailer load of dry firewood. The raffle was won by Amanda Draper. Well done, and a big thank-you to all those that supported the club by buying tickets in this raffle.

Thank-you to Pain & Kershaw Ltd who have come to the party with some sponsorship this year. Your support of our local Club is very much appreciated.
Next year the Martinborough Ladies Hockey Club is looking to purchase new team shirts with the idea of having a local business sponsor for each shirt and have their logo printed on the shirt. If your business would be interested in providing sponsorship in this way, please contact our Club President Honor Clark at Honz@xtra.co.nz
