Women’s Institute

Oct 2014

Women’s Institutes originated in Canada on 19th February 1897, they grew and spread astonishingly rapidly. The first institute in Great Britain started in Wales then spread to New Zealand in 1921. The Martinborough branch formed in 1928 will be celebrating its’ 86th birthday.

The Institute’s performed much in the communities, providing social contacts and teaching home making skills while providing all number of supports for their communities.

A book written by Jane Robinson ‘A force to be reckoned with’ is an interesting history of Women’s Institutes. Members contribute to assisting with needs both within New Zealand and abroad. Their knitting needles are always busy making warm wear fro new babies and those in need.

While not foremost a charitable organization they do contribute to the likes of the Rescue Helicopters, medical research an disaster relief, to name a few examples.

Looking through records it is interesting to note that in 1978 subscriptions were $2 * while 2014 subs are $24. As a donation to the Cancer society in 1974 was $2. the 2014 donation was $50.

Membership in the past has been as many as 60, it was popular with farmer as the stock sales were held on the same day and it was a time for women to get some social contact as well as compete in flower and cooking classes.
Changing times have made a difference in a number of organizations but the Institute never cease to amaze with the many contributions a small group can make in cash and kind.
Wairarapa has 13 Institutes in their Federation and Martinborough is still existing while Ruakokoputuna, Dyerville, Morrisons Bush and Pirinoa have gone into recess.
Although small in numbers we intend to celebrate with a party for our 86th Year.
