South Wairarapa Rotary

May 2014

On April 7th – 9th, South Wairarapa Rotary joined with other Wairarapa Rotary clubs to deliver a very successful 3-day RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver’s Awareness) programme of practical workshops, which includes six interactive sessions targeting 16-18 year old students (450 students from 7 Wairarapa colleges) approaching that crucial time in their lives where they start to drive independently. Students get tips from road safety experts to better understand how poor driver choices can change a life forever, including stopping distances, hazards, alcohol and drugs, and general vehicle safety. This programme has been extremely successful elsewhere, and after much discussion is finally being implemented in Wairarapa.

Lyn Patterson, Masterton Mayor, welcomed students to the programme, and Rotary District Governor Deb Gimblett also attended. Ru Tauri, General manager of RSE (Road Safety Education Ltd, who are “committed to reducing trauma on our roads through the delivery of industry-leading, evidence-based road safety education programs for high school students”) was very pleased that the inaugural event went so well and gave a big “thank you” to Wairarapa Rotary clubs for the key role that they played.
