Martinborough Community Choir

May 2014

This year the community choir is planning an ‘open rehearsal’, on Tuesday May 13, at 7.30pm in St. Andrew’s Hall, in preparation for our first public appearance this year.

We will be singing a short set of three songs in the ‘Wairarapa Vocal Spectacular’ at Wairarapa College Hall on Weds May 14.

As we’ve only had one concert so far, the choir felt it would be very helpful to sing for friends, family, and in fact anyone in town who would like to check us out. We would especially welcome anyone who thinks they might like to join the choir in the future.

We’ve also been invited to sing a couple of sets at the Olive Harvest Festival Night Market, on the early evening of June 28, so we are currently busy expanding our repertoire of new songs.

The choir is a diverse mix of people with different musical backgrounds: from singing in the shower to people with quite a lot of choral experience.

For me it’s a great mix, and we’re improving every week!

As well as our regular weekly Tuesday evening rehearsals, we’re planning a one day ‘Singshop’ – a singing workshop led by the wonderful Julian Raphael of the Wellington Community Choir. This will be held on Saturday June 7, again at St. Andrew’s Hall.

The cost will be very reasonable, and will include discounts for gold card holders/unwaged, and choir members.

Everyone who enjoys singing will be welcome to attend, and sing alongside current choir members.

In July I’ll be attending the NZ Choral Federation’s National Convention for choir leaders, in order to gain some inspiration, knowledge and better skills from the choral experts who’ll be teaching there, and bring it back here to Martinborough!

Victoria Jones.
