From the Mayor

May 2014

ANZAC day dawned fine and mild this year unlike some that I can remember.  I am certain it was the biggest turnout I have seen for a Martinborough Dawn Service and I know that there were definitely people present from outside the district.

Although the pleasant morning would have helped, a dawn service does have a certain poignancy and getting out of bed early feels like a sacrifice even if tiny compared to those made by soldiers in war.

It is a small thing we can do, once a year to honour those who fought for our freedom.  The large gathering in Martinborough Square this year certainly shows that national pride and our sense of belonging is alive and well.

At the wonderful ‘breakfast’ held after the service in the Town Hall, a gentleman asked me, why we can’t have a spot light over the service so everyone can see.  This same question is raised each year.  Two years ago Council inadvertently left the street lights on for the service and I was well and truly chastised by some of the older members of our community for not honouring the true meaning of the service.

Others however thought it was much better as they could see what was happening.  I was told though that dawn services are supposed to be held in the dark.  A quote from the RSA’s website says “The added symbolism of darkness breaking into sunrise makes for a compelling and emotional experience for everyone.”  Its quite true but perhaps we should remind everyone to bring a torch to the service.

A big thank you to everyone who helps with our ANZAC Services throughout our district especially those behind the scenes preparing the food.  The cuppas and camaraderie afterwards are as much of ‘who we are’ as the service itself.
