azz in Martinborough returns again in 2014 in their usual spot on the Martinborough events calendar during the first weekend of Spring,4-7 September.
“There’s a tonne of top talent, top entertainment, top sounds, top class newcomers and Rodger Fox is returning to top it all off with the hugely successful swinging tribute to Peggy Lee featuring long-term collaborator the swinging and sultry Erna Ferry,” says Music Director Ted Preston.
“It’s great that we have been able to secure this fantastic show for Martinborough. It promises to be an intimate evening celebrating the life and music of legendary vocalist, actress, songwriter and lyricist Peggy Lee. It will be ‘irrefutably hip and the very definition of cool’ as the publicity for the show goes,” adds Ted.
The rest of the feature acts for the Jazz in Martinborough line-up are well in train and include the much-anticipated return of the band that started it all in 2011 the Dixie Street Jazz Band. This Aussie ensemble rocked, rolled, swung and schmoozed the crowds at our inaugural festival back in 2011 and are back again for more.
“Rod Andrew and his band of merry men and their entourage had a fantastic time when they were here last – as did the patrons who got to hear them – and we are very, very happy to have them back on our programme for 2014,” says Ted.
The festival will start as usual on the Thursday evening at The Village Café with a group of relative newcomers to jazz, well at least in this combination. Wellington based Shake-‘Em-On-Downers promise to get you swinging and singing with their selection of modern and classical standards. A set of fine musicians, they are guaranteed to entertain and enliven your musical experience.
“The Royal New Zealand Air Force Swing Band brings us the big band sound from the 30s – think Glen Miller and Benny Goodman – through to the more modern treatments of swing associated with Frank Sinatra and now Michael Buble. Featuring vocalist Stephanie Paris, this concert will close our festival with some memorable music,” says Ted.
