Supporting our November Ladies Night guests Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band was Martinborough’s own Philippa Maynard with the just the smoothest blues, supported by Mr Johnny Gray on lead guitar, Steven Judd on rhythm and Rod Ingle on Bass.
She was followed by Kate Marshall lending her charms and complete command of fiddle, flute and accordion to the matchless guitar of Bob Cooper-Grundy. Raven Mavens (slinky songbirds Marian Carter and Cindy Muggeridge) shared their honky tonk and sultry songs ending with a classic rendition of Blues Stay Away!
Laura Collins then took charge on the back porch, with national treasure Wayne Mason on boogie keys, George Barris on a very fine upright bass, Matt Newman, country-blues pickin’ on guitar and accordion and Pete Cogswell on a collection of very unusual hardware, loosely called drums.
They gave us powerful, sublime “Secondhand Blues” (their CD) such as Hound Dog, Wade in the Water, Let the Good Times Roll and Van Morrison’s Crazy Love. Heaven! If you missed “Ladies Night” check out the You Tube link at CrossCreekBlues.co.nz and diary it for next year!
