Jazz in Martinborough has been running for three years and looks set to stay.
“All three festivals have been highly successful, each in their own way,” says Festival Producer Ian Cresswell. The festivals have achieved about $20,000 in “profits” since the first one in 2011. “About $6,000 has gone towards jazz music in Christchurch (post-earthquakes), $11,000 has been spent on sound equipment for the Town Hall, and this year’s “surplus” was about $3,000,” says Ian.
Part of the reason for a smaller return in 2013 was an increase in spending by Jazz in Martinborough on musicians and on promotional activities and materials. “The extra expenditure helped us achieve a very successful community event with larger numbers of jazz performances and greater numbers of patrons at all events,” says Festival Music Director Ted Preston. “It all helped to establish the event on the Martinborough calendar and to make the festival ‘the best real jazz festival in New Zealand’ as one patron put it.”
Jazz in Martinborough is set to be back the first week of Spring: 4-7 September 2014.
