Council and Lions sign agreement

Dec 2013

Council and the Lions Club have signed an agreement for use of “Lions’ Den” as a community facility in Civil Defence Emergencies.

In order to develop and implement a strong community base should the need for civil defence arise, the South Wairarapa District Council and Martinborough Lions have joined forces and signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The Martinborough Lions Club is making its building available to Council and residents of South Wairarapa in the event of a civil defence emergency.

The Lions Hall location, facilities and availability at 3 Oxford Street make it an ideal central hub for people directly affected by an emergency (individuals, families/whanau and communities).  Assistance at the club building could include provision of food, shelter, clothing, and psychological and social support.  It will also be a public information point in case a disaster should occur.

This occasion represents another valuable contribution to the community from the Martinborough Lions Club, in keeping with their primary purpose, ‘to be of service’.  The Martinborough Lions Club are proud to be part of this initiative.

In most emergencies you should be able to stay in your home.  Plan to be able to look after yourself and your household for at least three days or more.
