Here’s your chance to open your surf casting season in the best possible way. The annual surf casting competition at Ngawi is offering $1,000 for the biggest Moki caught in their competition being held on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of this month. There are also 2nd and 3rd moki prizes, so dust off your rods and practice your casting.
1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes will also be on offer for the biggest blue cod, kahawai and top lady and junior castors – all up $7,000 in prizes.
A highlight this year will be the presence of TV personality and fishing guru Graeme Sinclair who will be filming at the event for his popular fishing show ‘Gone Fishing’.
The fishing boundaries will be between Whangaimoana and Stone wall creek with contestants allowed two rods each. Entries will be registered ($20 per rod) at the Ngawi Hall between 11 am and 1.30 pm on the Saturday with the weigh in between 8.30 and 10 am on the Sunday.
Moki typically feed quite close to the shore 10 -25 metres out, just behind the wave dump onto the beach. They are partial to mussel, tuatua, or crab and prawn parts (mussel and prawn are available at supermarkets). Ideally the bait should be cut small so that the fish will take it whole.
A further attraction will be well known Wellington fishing Charter operator and Moki specialist Pete Lamb. Pete, who also has a band, will be entertaining with his fishing songs during the weigh in.
The contest is now in its third year, the numbers taking part doubled over the first two contests and another considerable increase in numbers is expected this year. Join in the fun.
